October 2017 Success & Fulfillment

October 1, 2017

Everyone has their own definition of success. For some, success is seeing a certain dollar amount in their checking account. For others, success is climbing the corporate ladder or receiving a specific title for their role such as a lawyer, banker or doctor.

Unfortunately, too many people feel they are successful but lack fulfillment. Even top achievers can have a sense of accomplishment and may be very successful in their career, extremely skilled and have the desired traits for their career role,  yet, some will admit they do not feel fulfilled and that something is “missing”.

Here are some things to ask yourself as you are busy achieving that can help shed some light on being successful AND fulfilled.

Do you find you feel energized, excited and inspired while you are busy doing what you are doing, achieving your goals, even when obstacles appear? Or do you find you are constantly feeling burnt out, overwhelmed and drained?

Are you thriving? Or are you barely surviving?

Would you like to do things differently in your career or your life that would bring more meaning or purpose to you?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these, realize you are not alone. There is a solution and you really can have both success and fulfillment.

Being aware of why you are feeling like something is “missing” or lacking in your life is key. Once you are aware, then move on to creating some new and more intentional choices. Reflect on your true core values. It is important to realize if you really know yourself, your true identity, your authentic self. It is common to blur our identity with other “roles” we have in life. Most of us have roles such as our role at work, role as a parent, role as a sibling, role in our community, role as a friend. And these roles often have obligations or so called rules enforced or created by others and can often feel as if we’ve been assigned a label. It is easy to begin to define ourself to others (especially when meeting someone new) as the identity we’ve assigned to the role(s) in our life. “I’m an Advertising Executive and father of 3 grown children.”

Bring more meaning into your career. Consider bringing more of your authentic self to work. Take some time to identify your strengths, traits and interests and consider different ways to use these or express them into your work. Reflecting on your values and interests can help you in understanding what makes work meaningful to you? Consider how you can integrate your strengths and talents into your work. A friend of mine, whom I really admire, Pat Dodge does this so remarkably. She is a department clothing stylist and her compassionate personality goes way beyond the sales counter as she truly cares and helps empower her customers to ensure they have a personable and unforgettable experience. You can read more about her unique, authentic approach in her book “Retail Reality”.

Have you ever asked yourself what success feels like? So often, we can get caught up in a cycle of achievement, the rat race and feel we get to a certain mile stone and then quickly start to go after the next, the next thinking we will finally feel that joy, happiness, etc when we “get there”. It can help to clarify why you want to get there? Why is this mile stone important to you? How do you think you will feel when you’ve reached your goal? In what ways can you begin to feel these emotions now? Waiting to experience emotions that are important to you could take a very long time. If success means feeling peaceful, joyful and secure, consider what other areas in your life can help you feel this way now? Or what smaller ways in your career can you feel these emotions now?

Lastly, try practicing gratitude. Each day, reflect on at least 3 things you are deeply grateful for. And write these down. But don’t just jot them down in your journal, truly feel the emotion of gratitude for these 3 things. I find when I consistently practice gratitude, I receive more of what I am grateful for. And this is truly a feeling of success and fulfillment.

In a previous post from last year, I wrote about feeling fulfilled in life. It is important to have both success and fulfillment. Knowing what your personal definition is of each, is key to having happiness in life, especially if there is a feeling of fulfillment and not just the obvious success symbols.

Perseverance Brings Positive Results

January 25, 2012

Despite early setbacks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. persevered and initiated change. Like King, if at first we don’t succeed, we should try and try again.

As I was walking out of South Bay Galleria, I overheard a child discussing a school project with his mother. He was explaining how much he admired Martin Luther King Jr. because he carried out his plan—even when the going got tough.

Many of us have an appreciation for Dr. King, and we know that if he were here today, he would encourage us to persevere as he did over a generation ago.

Last week, we looked at how assumptions can sometimes cause misunderstandings, confusion and undue stress—which can make us feel discouraged and keep us from reaching our goals or strengthening relationships. It takes perseverance to avoid making assumptions and achieve what we want in relationships and life success.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine while dining at Mama Terano in Rolling Hills Estates about perseverance. Over time, it can either be more challenging or easier to continue our goals with perseverance based on past experiences. Negative experiences may limit the amount of perseverance within; however, if we choose to learn the lesson from a challenging experience then we will be better equipped to take on our future goals.

When striving for a new goal, one of the most challenging obstacles may be bearing the difficulties calmly and without complaining. Limit assumptions and allow perseverance to inspire you to achieve the results you want. Here are a few tips:

  • When something starts to bother you, wait as long as you possibly can before giving into frustration or losing your temper. Expressing our feelings in a tactful way is important. Write about past challenging situations that you overcame in your journal. What were your feelings at the time?
  • If something does not seem to be working properly, give it another try. And another! Don’t give up so easily. Adopt the motto “Always finish what you start” and allow this to motivate you to completion.
  • Do you always get annoyed or lose your patience with a specific person? Take a moment to try to understand the person’s behavior. Use this as an opportunity to work through a challenge instead of trying to avoid or escape it.

Through his commitment, hard work, patience and perseverance, Dr. King achieved great things. Like Dr. King, sometimes we must try again and again to reach our goal.

Speak Your Language of Success

May 16, 2011

As I sat in the Redondo Beach Public Library last week, I pondered the word “success.” There are so many books on how to gain success, be it through material goods, career, leadership, honors or social status. Success can be reflected through being a parent or in having fulfilling and enriching relationships. As I thought about it, I realized how many different perspectives there are of success.

Your definition of success is uniquely yours. Have you ever thought your time here on Earth is limited? It is, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t get trapped into the “shoulds” that society and the media can put upon us, leading to living with the results of other people’s thinking. Everyone has his own opinion; don’t allow others’ opinions to smother your own beliefs, values and most of all, your view of success. Your unique values and beliefs on success are what keep you aligned on your true path, and by following your true path, you will live a more fulfilling life.

Take a few minutes to reflect on and answer the following questions regarding success:

  • When in your life have you felt success?
  • Which of your accomplishments stand out the most to you? What were you feeling when you achieved that goal?
  • What has been your most challenging life lesson so far?

Now, take a look at your answers. Do you notice any similar emotions, feelings or thoughts you felt about success during these achievements? What is your language of success? Ask yourself what success means to you.

It is important to keep in mind that you want to focus on the experiences that you want to achieve for yourself—not an idea that someone else might value or a goal that was forced on you. True, authentic success is when you fulfill your goal and your values.

Keep focusing on what energizes and fulfills you. This usually means focusing on your natural gifts and strengths in addition to your goals. Continue to feel empowered to live your life through your own unique language of success.

When we hold ourselves in high regard and focus on who we’ve become—not only on what we have accomplished—we find true success. Success can also be achieved in knowing that the more you help and inspire others, the more you help and inspire yourself. To your own life, be you. Be true to yourself and see what might happen.

What is your language of success?

Reflection and Clarity on Your Goals

December 18, 2010

When you have goals lined up this can help motivate you to make the best use of your time. Your goals should inspire you and make you smile. Your goals should align with your Authentic Core Values. You will find when you begin to integrate your Authentic Core Values into your life, achieving your goals energizes you even more, allows life more meaning and you will feel more fulfilled.

Take a moment to read through your  most recent list of goals and get in touch with the positive feelings you had when you first wrote these goals. Once you feel connected with your intentions reflect on some questions. Here are some questions and suggestions that will help you create action steps to help you achieve your goals while living your Authentic True Core Values. Before asking the questions, quiet your mind and be willing to allow your intuition to guide you to the right answer.

  • Name the Goal. Write your goal in present tense, as if you’ve already attained it. Listing your goals only in future tense, is allowing your sub-conscious mind to keep it in the future, because the truth is, you want this goal here and now.
  • What are the potential obstacles that could possibly get in the way of your progress towards your goal?
  • What has stopped you from achieving it so far? Were you not able to live out your Authentic True Core Values while trying to achieve this goal in the past?
  • What specific actions can you take to overcome these potential obstacles?
  • Specifically, what impact will achieving this goal have on your life? What benefits will you gain?
  • How will you be different when you accomplish this goal? How might your life be different when you accomplish this goal?
  • Is this a goal that you can believe will be a reality in your life? Are there certain costs you need to be aware of and are you willing to pay the price? Again, comparing your list of goals and your Authentic True Core Values will show you if you are in alignment or if something needs to be tweaked or totally changed.
  • You may already have the tools and resources you need to achieve your goals. You might need more resources. List the resources you will need to achieve each of your goals. These resources could be any one or more of the following: time, energy, a particular network, friends, money, software of some sort. This is just to give you an idea. What other resources can you think of that you might need to achieve your goals? Go through each goal for this step.
  • Once you have listed all the resources you might need to complete your goal, it is time to set action steps to help you attain these resources. What action steps can you start taking to attain these resources? Let’s give these action steps to attaining these resources a time frame and if possible actual completion dates.
  • What one specific action would have the greatest impact on manifesting this goal into reality; what would bring it real into your life; what would bring it into fruition?
  • What feels most inspiring to do right now that will empower me to maintain focus and momentum?
  • What is the one Action Step I most need to begin today?

Next, you are ready to set a time frame for completing your goals. You now have the tools and resources you will need. You have created Action Steps for each goal. Let’s select completion dates for each goal. You will be setting specific dates for completing but in addition, I would like you to include this important action step as part of your plan for each goal. Each day I would like you to imagine you have already achieved this goal. How will you feel? Visualize how you can feel this way naturally, every day.

Once you’ve identified the steps and actions needed, begin to move forward with these plans. You already have authentic and unique skills. You have the ambition and creativity to expand your ideas in your own dramatic and authentic style. Your answers identify the most effective action to take in alignment with your Authentic Self and True Core Values. As you begin to integrate these questions, you may want to tweak or add your own or choose entirely different questions.

Creating your life to be in alignment with your Authentic True Core Values can enhance success, fulfillment and happiness in your life. Each day offers you opportunities to live your values through your choices and behaviors.

Reflecting on your values daily not only will allow you to hold yourself accountable, but will also allow you to feel calm, confident and sure, knowing that you are focusing on what is most important to you. You will experience that simple feeling with in you of love, peace and joy more often when you align your life goals with your Authentic True Core Values. It is yourself to whom you must first be true. Feel empowered in knowing you have a choice and the choice is yours – yours to choose what is right for you!

When you are successful you will feel yourself improving and prospering in connection with yourself and the World around you. Using a holistic approach to tracking your success helps you see how you are thriving in all areas of your life. You will have more energy instead of feeling as if your energy is being drained from you. There are more creative and authentic ways to measure your goal success than the standard numbers method or the “show me the money”.

Acknowledge your goal success based on various aspects such as your flexibility, creative and authentic expression, the number of vacation days you will take this year, the fact you prioritized attending all of your sons little league games this season. These are all examples of personal signs of success that light up your eyes, leave warmth in year heart, and a glow on your face. What actions steps can you take today, big or small, that will keep you moving toward seeing more of what you want in your life?
