New Year Is Time To Review and Reflect

January 15, 2012

Now that it’s a new year, it’s time to reflect upon what happened last year and look forward to the future.

The new year is here. It’s time to reflect back on events, situations and challenges of the past year while anticipating the new year ahead. We may find ourselves thinking, “If only” or “I wish I would have made a different decision.”

On the other hand, perhaps we are content with all of the choices you made and goals you achieved in the previous year. If so, great! Hopefully, we made time to acknowledge and celebrate our accomplishments.

When reviewing the previous year and planning the new year, look at the direction your life is taking. How are you doing? Where are you at in life?

Reviewing and reflecting on how we are currently making our choices in life can often influence what goals we are setting for ourselves. When we know our values and beliefs and commit to those, we will find the choices we make are less of a struggle. We will enjoy living a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

You can feel more prepared for the new year by making either some small tweaks or more major shifts with your decision approaches and goal setting.

So, grab your journal or laptop and let’s begin to plan. Be sure to allow yourself a time when you won’t be disturbed. I find it can be helpful to get out in nature. Try heading to a local outdoor spot likeAlta Vista Park in Redondo Beach or Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes overlooking the ocean; this will provide a peaceful surrounding. Here are a few effective tips to get you started:

  • Reflect over the areas of your life you are happy with. What events, situations or people led you in this direction? Become aware of when you tend to allow your logical mind to guide you in your choices or when you are more inspired by your authentic interests or intuition. While our logical mind certainly helps in choosing right from wrong, using our unique talents and skills allow us to be most successful and happy in life. What supports, encourages and motivates you to stay on your current path? Is it trust, faith and belief in yourself, or is it persistence and patience? Imagine bringing these qualities to all the areas of your life and all the decisions you make. Would your direction change? Take time to celebrate your achievements from this past year.
  • Reflect over the areas of your life you are not content with. What events, situations or people led you in this direction? Become aware of how negative self-chatter or limiting beliefs may have played a role. Perhaps you allowed other people’s opinions and beliefs to overshadow your own true values. Choose to learn from these situations and gently remind yourself that they are now in the past. You can move forward by focusing on new actions to take. Write down where you want to go. Choose new actions you would like to see yourself develop. What type of actions would allow you to feel self-empowerment and have more confidence and courage?
  • Reflect on your commitment to your path. You should stick to it—no matter what. How will you overcome obstacles? What self-care actions can you commit to when a crises arises or a challenging situation? What options do you have when someone challenges your beliefs or values? How can you commit to your personal values in all areas of your life—work and personal?

Honoring our values allows us to create goals that are meaningful and live a fulfilling life, and the new year is filled with an array of possibilities.

What Did You Learn Today?

September 27, 2011

Whether it’s a physical lesson or a mental one, it’s easy to learn something new every day. Each day offers an opportunity for you to learn something new about yourself. Reflecting on what new thing you’ve learned each day creates more awareness about yourself, someone close to you, your environment or your community.

Learning deepens our character and makes us more intriguing to those around us. We become more confident. Learning provides an understanding of the historical, social and natural processes that impact and limit our lives.

Each day you can ask yourself if there was new information you learned. Perhaps there was a lesson you learned about yourself or someone else? We should ask ourselves what we learned at the end of each day, and by doing so, we will grow and develop. If we’re aware of what we’ve learned, we can avoid repeating the same mistakes and continue to practice what works.

My curiosity inspired me to ask some friends what new thing they learned today. I found their answers helped open up a deeper awareness and appreciation for learning something new in what can seem like just another simple, ordinary day. Maybe you will, too. This is what I heard and learned about them:

  • Digging nails out of a deck to replace them with deck screws gives you blisters!
  • I like to challenge myself daily in one of my favorite subjects: History. I also love spelling, grammar and literature, so I also try to learn something new every day in this area as well.
  • Don’t stand in direct sunlight when it’s 106 degrees out.
  • I learned again what amazing animals horses are, and how they can make my heart soar when I share my time with them! My daughter and I went on a trail ride with her horses, and it was amazing.
  • To challenge myself is better than to challenge others.
  • The more you surround yourself with like-minded people, the stronger you will become.
  • I am unique. There is no one like me, and I should embrace my uniqueness and difference in thoughts, feelings and opinions instead of trying to blend into the crowd.

Try to really listen to a lecture, a spouse or even the lyrics of a song. Active listening promotes learning every single time we practice it. Great public speakers are engaging because they listen to the feedback they get from the audience, and they respond to it accordingly. Active listening to music or nature will help you tune in and teach you something new about the sights and sounds we often take for granted.

What did I learn today? As I ate my sushi at Asaka, I was reminded that one of the most enjoyable ways to learn new things is by taste. It can be as simple as sampling a new type of coffee or espresso. Taste and texture generate long-lasting memories.

You just might be surprised how much you learn each day. Begin to take the ordinary events of a day and extract the most valuable learning experiences from them. Keep a journal documenting daydreams, thoughts, experiences and stressful times and you will become more aware of the knowledge you gained from each.

Weekly Reflection Creates a Successful and Empowering YOU!

July 22, 2011

Looking back over your week, did you have great days filled with success or were there moments of overwhelming obstacles that left you feeling frustrated? Let’s face it, some weeks are better than others. When we have those weeks that don’t go as well as we would have liked, it can help to take some time and reflect on a few things so help us feel refreshed and focused and have a better week next week.
You can feel empowered when you reflect on the following:
  • Look back at your recent history and think about what worked and what didn’t work. Once you have that insight, commit to repeating what does work. Things will seem less frustrating and you will feel more focused and motivated.
  • Forgive yourself for any mistakes you might have made. Celebrate all your successes and release the past.
  • Set some goals. As you think over the past few days, you may realize what you want to change.
Practicing the above tips on a weekly basis can help you commit to a new behavior and monitor your results. Writing in a journal or leaving yourself voice memos via your iphone can help gain clarity on what changes or improvements you would like to make.
Sometimes, it can be helpful to talk things over with a friend, partner or life coach. Seeking out a variety of people in your life to talk about your weekly successes and frustrations with can offer different perspectives and creative solutions.
Often the major obstacles that prevent us from achieving all of our potential comes from within; our inner critic or negative inner chatter that challenges our belief in ourselves. Having supportive people in your life help you to tap into your creativity and use your ability to see other possibilities of action to take and what changes or improvements to make.
We often forget to recognize, embrace and use our key strengths. Knowing and using your greatest strengths helps you to create a authentic life filled with happiness and true fulfillment. When friends, family, a partner or a life coach can help bring specific attention to your strengths and natural gifts this can boost your self-esteem and confidence.

Speak Your Language of Success

May 16, 2011

As I sat in the Redondo Beach Public Library last week, I pondered the word “success.” There are so many books on how to gain success, be it through material goods, career, leadership, honors or social status. Success can be reflected through being a parent or in having fulfilling and enriching relationships. As I thought about it, I realized how many different perspectives there are of success.

Your definition of success is uniquely yours. Have you ever thought your time here on Earth is limited? It is, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t get trapped into the “shoulds” that society and the media can put upon us, leading to living with the results of other people’s thinking. Everyone has his own opinion; don’t allow others’ opinions to smother your own beliefs, values and most of all, your view of success. Your unique values and beliefs on success are what keep you aligned on your true path, and by following your true path, you will live a more fulfilling life.

Take a few minutes to reflect on and answer the following questions regarding success:

  • When in your life have you felt success?
  • Which of your accomplishments stand out the most to you? What were you feeling when you achieved that goal?
  • What has been your most challenging life lesson so far?

Now, take a look at your answers. Do you notice any similar emotions, feelings or thoughts you felt about success during these achievements? What is your language of success? Ask yourself what success means to you.

It is important to keep in mind that you want to focus on the experiences that you want to achieve for yourself—not an idea that someone else might value or a goal that was forced on you. True, authentic success is when you fulfill your goal and your values.

Keep focusing on what energizes and fulfills you. This usually means focusing on your natural gifts and strengths in addition to your goals. Continue to feel empowered to live your life through your own unique language of success.

When we hold ourselves in high regard and focus on who we’ve become—not only on what we have accomplished—we find true success. Success can also be achieved in knowing that the more you help and inspire others, the more you help and inspire yourself. To your own life, be you. Be true to yourself and see what might happen.

What is your language of success?

Celebrate Life with Simple Pleasures

May 4, 2011

In today’s on-the-go, nonstop world, it can feel like you are constantly rushing. You may find your focus is on achieving one thing only to have to complete another goal and then quickly move onto the next thing. This can create a feeling of lack. You may find yourself asking, “Why do I feel unfulfilled when I have been actively achieving some wonderful goals?”

Take a break to celebrate and appreciate your achievements. Even the simple little joys that make up your daily life deserve to be acknowledged.

Remember to celebrate what you did accomplish—even the little steps count. I have a method I like to refer to as Success-Building Motivators. This method encourages us to celebrate all our accomplishments, no matter how small they may appear to others. Certainly, we don’t need to have big celebrations every day, but even minor challenges we overcome, such as dealing with a difficult customer, deserve recognition. Smaller accomplishments need to be acknowledged and celebrated as well as the larger goals.

Why are rewards important? Rewarding yourself for a behavior where a positive outcome follows will help you form a habit. Choosing to reward yourself throughout the goal process will help keep you on track and stick to your positive habits, core values and goals.

Celebrating along the way can help you recognize that you actually did go from “there” to “here.” Take time to acknowledge and reflect on the lessons you may have learned along the way and to commend yourself for how well you overcame obstacles to stay on your path and reach your goal. One of the most important things I tell my clients they can do is to ask themselves the following questions:

  • What authentic, true value or positive habit have I accomplished that I am proud of?
  • What were the lessons I learned along the way?
  • What were the roadblocks I overcame?
  • In what areas of my life have I grown? How have I grown?

Your answers will provide great insight to you about your focus in life; they’ll show you your personal progress and where you can improve, tweak, change and, most of all, celebrate what works in your life. Taking time to observe and honor all you’ve accomplished and acknowledge your growth along the way is part of enjoying a fulfilling life.

Here are just a few simple pleasures you can enjoy daily to celebrate the big achievements and the small joys:

  • Have a dinner party or barbecue with those who helped you and supported you, as well as those whom you wish to share with in honor of reaching your goal. Connecting with people who have supported you helps to build rewarding relationships. Share some good laughs. You may find yourself inspired to set a new challenge for yourself.
  • Take a walk in nature—a park, garden, mountains or beach—and enjoy the beauty.
  • Read by the fireplace or lounge in bed while enjoying your favorite sudoku or crossword puzzle. These activities can offer a feeling of pure contentment and fun mental stimulation.
  • Listening to the birds chirp in the morning outside the bedroom window offers a peaceful way to begin your day and offers some quiet reflection.
  • Taking a nap in a hammock under a shady tree or enjoying the warmth of the morning sun on your skin can offer replenishment for your soul and create a feeling of celebration within.
  • Reward yourself with a nice lunch at an outdoor cafe. Invite someone to join you.
  • Buy some fresh flowers at the Farmers Market for yourself or for someone you know who just completed a goal. This can be a kind gesture that makes their day—and yours.

I recently enjoyed a celebration with friends at Kincaid’s on the Redondo Beach Pier. We enjoyed several appetizers on their happy hour menu at a very reasonable price. Seeing the sunset made for a very simple, yet spectacular evening.

Celebrate every success and milestone along the way. It is important to have something to look forward to. Taking time to celebrate allows you to recognize the personal growth you’ve experienced during the goal process and you will sense more fulfillment in your life.

How do you celebrate life’s simple pleasures? Please share your comments.

Reflection and Clarity on Your Goals

December 18, 2010

When you have goals lined up this can help motivate you to make the best use of your time. Your goals should inspire you and make you smile. Your goals should align with your Authentic Core Values. You will find when you begin to integrate your Authentic Core Values into your life, achieving your goals energizes you even more, allows life more meaning and you will feel more fulfilled.

Take a moment to read through your  most recent list of goals and get in touch with the positive feelings you had when you first wrote these goals. Once you feel connected with your intentions reflect on some questions. Here are some questions and suggestions that will help you create action steps to help you achieve your goals while living your Authentic True Core Values. Before asking the questions, quiet your mind and be willing to allow your intuition to guide you to the right answer.

  • Name the Goal. Write your goal in present tense, as if you’ve already attained it. Listing your goals only in future tense, is allowing your sub-conscious mind to keep it in the future, because the truth is, you want this goal here and now.
  • What are the potential obstacles that could possibly get in the way of your progress towards your goal?
  • What has stopped you from achieving it so far? Were you not able to live out your Authentic True Core Values while trying to achieve this goal in the past?
  • What specific actions can you take to overcome these potential obstacles?
  • Specifically, what impact will achieving this goal have on your life? What benefits will you gain?
  • How will you be different when you accomplish this goal? How might your life be different when you accomplish this goal?
  • Is this a goal that you can believe will be a reality in your life? Are there certain costs you need to be aware of and are you willing to pay the price? Again, comparing your list of goals and your Authentic True Core Values will show you if you are in alignment or if something needs to be tweaked or totally changed.
  • You may already have the tools and resources you need to achieve your goals. You might need more resources. List the resources you will need to achieve each of your goals. These resources could be any one or more of the following: time, energy, a particular network, friends, money, software of some sort. This is just to give you an idea. What other resources can you think of that you might need to achieve your goals? Go through each goal for this step.
  • Once you have listed all the resources you might need to complete your goal, it is time to set action steps to help you attain these resources. What action steps can you start taking to attain these resources? Let’s give these action steps to attaining these resources a time frame and if possible actual completion dates.
  • What one specific action would have the greatest impact on manifesting this goal into reality; what would bring it real into your life; what would bring it into fruition?
  • What feels most inspiring to do right now that will empower me to maintain focus and momentum?
  • What is the one Action Step I most need to begin today?

Next, you are ready to set a time frame for completing your goals. You now have the tools and resources you will need. You have created Action Steps for each goal. Let’s select completion dates for each goal. You will be setting specific dates for completing but in addition, I would like you to include this important action step as part of your plan for each goal. Each day I would like you to imagine you have already achieved this goal. How will you feel? Visualize how you can feel this way naturally, every day.

Once you’ve identified the steps and actions needed, begin to move forward with these plans. You already have authentic and unique skills. You have the ambition and creativity to expand your ideas in your own dramatic and authentic style. Your answers identify the most effective action to take in alignment with your Authentic Self and True Core Values. As you begin to integrate these questions, you may want to tweak or add your own or choose entirely different questions.

Creating your life to be in alignment with your Authentic True Core Values can enhance success, fulfillment and happiness in your life. Each day offers you opportunities to live your values through your choices and behaviors.

Reflecting on your values daily not only will allow you to hold yourself accountable, but will also allow you to feel calm, confident and sure, knowing that you are focusing on what is most important to you. You will experience that simple feeling with in you of love, peace and joy more often when you align your life goals with your Authentic True Core Values. It is yourself to whom you must first be true. Feel empowered in knowing you have a choice and the choice is yours – yours to choose what is right for you!

When you are successful you will feel yourself improving and prospering in connection with yourself and the World around you. Using a holistic approach to tracking your success helps you see how you are thriving in all areas of your life. You will have more energy instead of feeling as if your energy is being drained from you. There are more creative and authentic ways to measure your goal success than the standard numbers method or the “show me the money”.

Acknowledge your goal success based on various aspects such as your flexibility, creative and authentic expression, the number of vacation days you will take this year, the fact you prioritized attending all of your sons little league games this season. These are all examples of personal signs of success that light up your eyes, leave warmth in year heart, and a glow on your face. What actions steps can you take today, big or small, that will keep you moving toward seeing more of what you want in your life?
